Hydroquinone: Usage, Precautions, and Side Effects

Purpose

Hydroquinone is a topical treatment used to lighten areas of hyperpigmentation, such as freckles, melasma (brown skin patches), acne scars, and age spots.

Do Not Use Hydroquinone If:

• You are allergic to hydroquinone or any of its ingredients.

Warnings & Precautions

• Consult your doctor about any medical conditions before starting this treatment.

• Inform your doctor if you have a sulfite allergy.

• Sunscreen is essential while using Hydroquinone, as sun exposure can affect its effectiveness.

• Always patch test on a small area before applying to larger sections.

• In rare cases, prolonged use may cause blue-black skin discoloration. If this occurs, discontinue use and contact your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Discontinue use and seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

• Rash, hives, itching

• Red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin

• Wheezing, chest or throat tightness

• Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking

• Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat

Other possible side effects include:

• Allergic skin reactions

• Redness and irritation

• Stinging at the application site

• Dryness

Interactions with Other Medications

Inform your doctor about all medications you are currently taking.

How to Use Hydroquinone

• Suitable for adults and children aged 12 and older.

• For external use only—avoid contact with the eyes, nose, and mouth.

• Follow your doctor’s instructions for application.

• Wash hands before and after use.

• Apply a thin layer twice daily—once in the morning and once at bedtime.

Storage Instructions

• Store at room temperature (68–77°F or 20–25°C).

• Keep out of reach of children.

• Do not use past the expiry date stated on the packaging, which refers to the last day of that month.
